FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHO LEADS THE SEARCH?

The responsibility of choosing the Head of School rests with the Board of Trustees. Boards usually form Search Committees to run the process and eventually recommend a Head of School to the Board.  Board President Catharine Cathey has asked Vice President Wally Gurzenda and Trustee Rich Nichols to head Valley’s Search Committee. We will also form an Advisory Committee of representatives from various constituencies to provide broader input.

WHO WILL BE ON THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE?

The Advisory Committee will consist of 6-10 individuals representing Valley’s various constituencies (Current Parents, Faculty, Alumni, etc.) The Committee will interview candidates and provide valuable input to the Search Committee throughout the process.

WHAT DO THE SEARCH AND ADVISORY COMMITTEES DO?

The Search Committee runs the entire search process. The first step after the Committee is formed is to engage the professional search firm.  The Search Committee and the consultant create a marketing document to advertise the position, review the resumes submitted and select semi-finalist candidates.  These individuals are interviewed by the Search Committee.  At this stage, the names are still confidential.  Typically 2-3 finalist candidates are selected and invited to campus to meet the Valley community and be interviewed by the Advisory Committee.  The Search Committee ultimately presents one broadly supported candidate to the Board of Trustees for approval.  Once the Head has been approved, the Search Committee facilitates a smooth transition.

HAS A PROFESSIONAL SEARCH FIRM BEEN HIRED?

Educators’ Collaborative, an educational search and consulting firm has been engaged. The partners consist of experienced independent school leaders.  Heading our team are Ned Becker and Evan Peterson.

WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR THE SEARCH?

Candidates will be evaluated in November and December 2016.   The Board hopes to be able to announce the new Head of School in January 2017.  It is anticipated the new head will be on campus in July of 2017.

HOW WILL I BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE?

There will be opportunities for community members to meet with the Search Consultant on October 12, 2016 at Valley. Additionally, you are encouraged to complete an anonymous online survey, which can be found at the following links until October 20, 2016.

WHAT ABOUT MY CHILD?

Day-to-day life at Valley will remain the same for the students, faculty and parents. Clair Ward will continue to lead the school with professionalism and dedication until June 30, 2017.  The Board of Trustees, the Administration team, the Faculty and the Staff will ensure that the transition is smooth and that the education provided to Valley students remains at its customarily high standard.

HOW WILL WE SAY GOODBYE TO CLAIR?

Closer to the end of the school year, there will be many opportunities to wish Clair, Bryon and Ella farewell and to thank Clair for all she has done for Valley.
