Jessica Barbera

“I love to write—the creative and strategic processes, and also the physical act. As a kid, I discovered that I can write forwards and backwards in cursive mirror image with both hands simultaneously.”
Director of Marketing & Communications

Jessica received her B.A. in English, sociology, and philosophy from Bucknell University. Her graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh was in English with certification in critical theory. At Pitt, Jessica taught courses on British modernism, truth and narrative, literatures of war, critical theory, and graphic novels. In her research and writing, she concentrated on literatures and aesthetic representations of illness, psychoanalysis, medical narratives, and illness memoirs. She was the recipient of the Andrew Mellon Fellowship, and is co-editor of A Dictionary of Cultural and Critical Theory, published by Wiley-Blackwell.
Jessica joined the Valley School community in 2017. In her free time, she enjoys reading, hiking, concerts, and cooking. She loves to travel and explore the outdoors with her children. Her favorite things are books, art, music, people, and cuisine. She firmly believes that the Oxford comma is always the right choice.
