At Valley School of Ligonier, we believe that education goes above and beyond preparing students for academic success. It is also about helping them develop the character, compassion, and sense of responsibility to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
On Friday, September 18, our Upper School students took that commitment beyond the classroom for our annual Day of Caring.
Working alongside faculty and community partners, students rolled up their sleeves to serve organizations throughout our region. They helped maintain community gardens and public spaces, supported the Ligonier Valley YMCA and Lincoln Highway Experience, assisted the Waterford Volunteer Fire Department, and sorted food donations at the Westmoreland Food Bank.
But the lessons extended far beyond the tasks they completed.
Through hands-on service, students experienced the importance of teamwork, developed relationships across grade levels, and discovered how their individual efforts can contribute to something larger than themselves. Our seventh and eighth graders also had opportunities to develop their leadership skills while helping guide their fellow students.
At Valley School, "doing good works for others" is more than a statement in our mission. It is something we teach, practice, and celebrate.
We are grateful to our community partners, faculty, and staff for making these meaningful learning experiences possible and for helping our students understand that even small acts of service can make a lasting difference.
In an environment that is safe, challenging, nurturing, and disciplined, Valley School provides a balanced and strong program of study for a diverse group of children. Our goal is to stimulate in each young person lifelong habits of moral behavior, seeking wisdom, and doing good works for others.
