At Valley School of Ligonier, athletics is about more than winning games. Through physical activity, teamwork, and opportunities to explore new sports, students learn to challenge themselves, care for their bodies, and develop habits that support lifelong wellness. With support from contributions to the Valley Fund, Valley is expanding its grades 6–8 athletic program, creating more opportunities for students to discover their interests, build new skills, and prepare for the next chapter of their athletic journeys.
The Valley Fund supports the school’s commitment to providing meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. As Valley broadens its athletic offerings, these contributions help advance opportunities for scholar-athletes to explore new activities, develop healthy habits, and benefit from a well-rounded middle school experience.
Led by coaches Coach Kriger and Coach Petruska, the expansion reflects a thoughtful approach to understanding students’ interests, considering the resources already available to the school, and identifying sports that will serve students both now and in the future.
Expanding Opportunities Through Lifelong Sports
When evaluating opportunities to expand Valley’s athletic offerings, Coach Kriger and Coach Petruska began by looking at the students themselves. Understanding the demographics of the middle school population and the activities students were interested in helped the athletic department determine which sports would provide the greatest opportunities for participation and growth.
The coaches also considered the facilities and natural resources already available to Valley. With a tennis court at Rector Park and more than 400 acres of wooded campus featuring trails and open spaces, the school had a strong foundation on which to build an expanded program.
With support from the Valley Fund helping to advance the school’s educational and extracurricular opportunities, Valley is broadening its athletic program to offer students more ways to participate, develop their abilities, and discover new interests.
The expanded selection includes several lifelong sports, such as strength and conditioning, yoga, tennis, golf, and swimming, along with a sports sampler program. Offered through a partnership with the Ligonier Valley YMCA, the sampler introduces students to activities such as pickleball, volleyball, and indoor soccer.
By exposing students to a variety of sports, the program encourages them to discover new interests, develop a wider range of athletic skills, and find forms of physical activity they may enjoy throughout their lives.
Rather than focusing exclusively on specialization in a single sport, Valley’s approach emphasizes becoming a well-rounded athlete. Students are encouraged to explore different activities, develop complementary skills, and consider opportunities to participate in more than one sport—even during the same season when schedules allow.
A Full Calendar of Athletic Opportunities
Valley’s expanded athletic program provides students in grades 6–8 with opportunities to participate throughout the academic year.
Fall sports include field hockey, soccer, cross country, and tennis. Students can develop endurance and teamwork through running and soccer, build technical skills in field hockey, or explore the strategy and individual challenges of tennis.
Winter sports include girls’ and boys’ basketball, strength and conditioning, yoga, swimming, and the sports sampler. These offerings allow students to remain active during the colder months while developing strength, flexibility, coordination, and familiarity with different athletic activities.
Spring sports include girls’ and boys’ lacrosse, golf, baseball, and softball. With a mix of team and individual sports, the spring season provides additional opportunities for students to discover their strengths and contribute to a team.
This variety is intentional. Participating in multiple sports can help students develop different physical abilities, learn to adapt to new challenges, and build a broader understanding of athletic performance. A student who plays soccer in the fall, participates in strength and conditioning during the winter, and takes up golf or lacrosse in the spring experiences a range of physical and mental challenges that can contribute to overall athletic development.
The program also considers the next stage of students’ education. By examining the athletic offerings at area high schools, the coaches are working to help Valley students develop the foundational skills, experience, and confidence to pursue athletics as they move into high school.
Building Community Partnerships
Expanding the athletic program also means expanding the community that supports it. Valley has established partnerships with several area organizations, giving students access to specialized facilities and instruction while strengthening connections with the surrounding community.
Through the Ligonier Valley YMCA, students can participate in swimming and the sports sampler, which introduces them to pickleball, volleyball, and indoor soccer. Tennis players can develop their skills at Greensburg Racquet Club, while students participating in golf have opportunities to play at Ligonier Country Club.
Valley is also partnering with Citikidz Summer Camp to provide baseball and softball opportunities on its turf fields. These experiences will help scholar-athletes continue developing their skills outside the traditional school season, reinforcing the idea that athletic growth can extend beyond the school calendar.
These partnerships complement Valley’s expanded athletic offerings by connecting students with specialized facilities and additional opportunities for practice and skill development. Together with support from the Valley Fund, they help Valley continue building a program that responds to students’ interests and encourages participation in a broad range of activities.
They also help students see athletics as part of a larger community, where coaches, facilities, and fellow athletes contribute to their growth.
Preparing Students for Competition
Along with creating more opportunities for participation, Valley is expanding its competitive reach. Coach Kriger applied for Valley’s membership in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL), and the school has officially joined this year. Membership will provide students with opportunities to compete against schools throughout the Pittsburgh region.
The decision to expand baseball and softball also reflects the changing athletic landscape among local middle schools. As more area schools introduce these programs, Valley students will have additional opportunities to develop their skills and compete against their peers.
By considering both local competition and the sports available at area high schools, Valley’s athletic department is building a program that supports students at their current level while preparing them for future opportunities. The goal is to help students enter high school with a solid athletic foundation, experience across different sports, and an understanding of what it takes to continue improving.
Support from the Valley Fund helps Valley pursue its commitment to a well-rounded education, in which opportunities to learn, grow, and develop extend beyond the academic curriculum. An expanded athletic program gives students additional ways to challenge themselves, discover their strengths, and build confidence as they prepare for high school and beyond.
Caring for the Whole Athlete
Developing stronger athletes involves more than practicing skills or improving performance on the field. Valley’s coaches are incorporating conversations about nutrition, hydration, recovery, and listening to the body into the athletic experience.
Students are learning the importance of fueling their bodies with nutritious foods, drinking enough water, and allowing time for recovery. These conversations help scholar-athletes understand how everyday choices influence their energy, performance, and overall well-being.
The program also emphasizes the connection between physical activity and mental and emotional health. Exercise can provide a healthy outlet for stress, offer opportunities to build confidence, and help students develop strategies for navigating challenges. Through athletics, students can learn that taking care of themselves involves both physical and emotional wellness.
This whole-athlete approach reflects Valley’s broader commitment to cultivating wellness. By teaching students to recognize their bodies’ needs and make thoughtful choices, the athletic program aims to instill habits that will benefit them long after their middle school years.
Developing Well-Rounded, Lifelong Athletes
At the heart of Valley’s athletic expansion is the belief that students benefit from exploring a variety of physical activities rather than feeling limited to a single sport. Exposure to different sports allows students to discover new passions, develop diverse skills, and find activities that suit their interests and abilities.
Encouraging multi-sport participation also reinforces an important message: athletic development is a process. Strength, coordination, endurance, flexibility, and teamwork can grow through different experiences, and students have opportunities to learn something new from each one.
As Valley continues to develop its grades 6–8 athletic program, expanded offerings, community partnerships, and competitive opportunities are working together toward a common goal: preparing students to become stronger, more confident, and more versatile athletes.
Contributions to the Valley Fund help make Valley’s commitment to a comprehensive educational experience possible, supporting opportunities that nurture students’ growth in and beyond the classroom. The expanded athletic program is one example of how philanthropic support can help the school respond to students’ interests and invest in their development.
Ultimately, success extends beyond the scoreboard. It includes learning to work with others, responding constructively to challenges, managing stress, caring for one’s body, and discovering the value of staying active throughout life. Through the generosity of the Valley community and the continued growth of its athletic program, Valley School is helping students build a foundation for wellness and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.
