The Settlement Project

“Settlement” is a long-term, outdoor, hands-on learning experience that is an integral part of our 5th-grade social studies curriculum.
In the classroom and outside, students learn about how people survived and thrived thousands of years ago. Small groups of students then work together to conceive a unique civilization settlement. Each group builds a woodland shelter and draws on their social studies knowledge to determine and demonstrate the ways in which their civilization includes all of the requisite traits: cities, complex institutions, specialized workers, record keeping, and improved technology. One of the most important lessons that comes from the settlement project is teamwork. This is a challenge for many 5th-grade students, and there often are initial conflicts within and between settlement groups. As they work together, however, students learn how to collaborate, compromise, and communicate effectively with their peers. It is amazing to see them overcome challenges and gain confidence and independence.
